It only seems like yesterday that I posted the last blog. Actually it was the 4th July.
Time flies.
I’m going to aim to post at least twice a week from now on! Wish me luck…
Chat Rooms - Not As Safe As We Thought
There’s been some stuff on the TV this morning about the safety of internet chat rooms for teenagers.
It strikes me that there is a false sense of security with chat rooms. On the face of it they should be populated with like-minded teenagers sharing thoughts, ideas and laughs.
I think that most people believe that to be the case. However, according to GMTV, over 50% of chat room visitors have received unwanted pestering from strangers who are not teenagers.
So what can you do?
1) Make absolutely sure you know which chat rooms are being visited. Most chat room systems have ‘about us’ pages and contact email addresses for the owners. Investigate these and make contact. Try to get a ‘positive’ feeling that the owners are also doing their bit to protect chat room visitors.
2) Make sure that no personal details are ever given out in a chat room. It is easy to be tricked into giving small bits of information out. Ensure that this does not happen by reading carefully what is asked and thinking about how you are going to reply.
3) If the chat room feels ‘unsafe’ - stop using it.
4) Instigate a ‘hand shake’ with your friends. Agree on a word, phrase or number that you can use to validate that it really is them in the chat room. Never use the hand shake in the chat room, always use it via private message or by telephone.
5) Monitor those who are using the chat room by sitting with them. They probably won’t like it, but it will make you feel better.
